Shaquan, tell us about your book?
This book is about my personal story and the many challenges that I faced. Many of my challenges stemmed from lack of knowledge, self or life experience. I had to make decisions that I was not equipped to do at the time. However through faith and the power of PRAYERS, the seven steps I developed and followed throughout my life. Now I want to help others across the world by sharing my story and giving the reader tools they can used to Step into their vision.
How did you come up with idea for this book?
I came up with the idea through a presentation I did at a homeless shelter. Asked to give words of encouragement I told my story in less than 5 minutes. Every time I give a talk people world come up to me afterwards and wanted to know more about me. So I was encouraged to write by my friend Andrenee Boothe who became a mentor to me
What was the most difficult aspect of writing this book?
The most difficult aspect was to put pen to paper. My thoughts were all jumbled and I had no direction. I just took a point and began to writing. It was all over the place. Later I went back through it and put it in order.
Why do you write?
I love the freedom of expression that I have when writing. It is a quite but powerful way to get a message to anyone across the globe. The best part is you can connect with someone through writing you may have never met otherwise.
What valuable lessons do you want readers to learn from your book?
I want readers to understand that no matter how bad a situation looks or how bad they feel in the midst of a life crisis, there is always hope for a brighter day, but more importantly, with enough time the true reason for things will be revealed, so patience and perspective are necessary in the midst.
Who are your favorite authors?
I have a few authors I enjoy. However, the authors that have made the most impact on my life are Maya Angelou and Tony Robins.
What book(s) are you reading now?
I am reading Sacred Salutations by Andrenee Boothe as this is the book that helped me get clarity during the time I was laid off from work. I now have a new employer, landed my first contract and been approached for several speaking engagements.
What books have most influenced your life?
The book that has most influence me is Maya’s I know why the caged bird sings. I connected with the characters immediately. I did not have a voice for long time. I escaped in the world of books until read this one and knew I had to change my life.
If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?
If I had to choose I would consider Iyanla Vanzant a mentor. I enjoyed her books at a dark time in my life when I was in depression and grieving. Besides my faith her books helped me to develop action plans.
Any advice to give to aspiring writers?
Do not overthink it. Just put pen to paper and start writing. It does not have to be perfect or in order as you can edit it later. Focus on the story you want to tell and what you want the reader to know. In the end you will be glad that you started.
