Shawneya, tell us about your book? My book is an autobiography that speaks of the struggles and trials that I fought to overcome. It tells of the sexual abuse that I endured at the hand of those entrusted to me.  “Memoirs of an Over-comer” also speaks of the issues that I went through such as teenage pregnancy, tragedy, and bad relationships, just to name a few. The reader will embark on a journey from dark places to a place of enlightment. My book comes from a real and transparent place but most of all readers will be left feeling inspired and encouraged.

How did you come up with idea for this book? The idea of my book was commissioned by God. I started off writing down my feelings and venting about overwhelming situations. It was healing for me to vent through writing.  I could not share everything that I was going through with the people around me.  By writing down my feelings and recalling certain situations I began to feel a huge weight lifted. It was then that I was lead by God to turn my feelings and my testimony into a book.

What was the most difficult aspect of writing this book? The most difficult aspect of writing my book was that I knew that my story would hurt those that were closest to me. I held in lot of family secrets and the details of some things would be heard for the first time. I knew that it would be very difficult but I knew that it was necessary in order for others to be free and healed.  In doing so I believed God to heal those that were closest to me as well.

Why do you write? I write to help bring healing and encouragement to others. My mission is to inspire and motivate people to be better and to have a life of wholeness. There is a great need to encourage others to be free of their past. I also write in the hopes that readers would learn to forgive others as well as themselves.

What valuable lessons do you want readers to learn from your book? The valuable lessons that I want readers to learn is the gift of forgiveness. To have faith enough to know that everything that they go through is working for their good. I want them to know that they have a God given assignment that they must continually move forward to reach. Another valuable lesson would be to never stay stuck in their past and at any cost to work toward wholeness in mind, body, and spirit.

Who are your favorite authors? I have several favorites authors but the one that sticks out is Iyanla Vanzant. I love her style of writing because to me it is sheer brilliance. I love that her stories not only come from a real place but that they promote healing. Even if your religious or spiritual beliefs are not the same you can always pick out treasures from every author.

What book(s) are you reading now? I am currently reading the bible. I chose to put down the books that I was reading because I am writing again. Reading and studying the word of God gives me the substance I need to impart into others. I also receive revelation and direction when I am in tune to God’s word.

What books have most influenced your life? “Yesterday I Cried,” by Iyanla Vanzant also inspired me to write. The realness of her writing let me know that I could share my testimony in my own way. It didn’t have to be watered down and fluffy it just had to be the truth and from a real place.

If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor? If I had to choose I would consider the Bible as my guide. You can search the word of God and find someone going through difficult trials and you learn through their example how they overcame. That in and of itself inspires me to live right.

Any advice to give to aspiring writers? My advice to aspiring writers would be to never give up on your dream. It is very easy to become discouraged when you have writers block or when you set unrealistic time frames. Not everything will go according to plan. Don’t put pressure on yourself but work everyday to pursue your writing. Think of it as a cake you have to have all the right ingredients and then you have to wait for your cake to bake as well as rise. Be patient, bold, take risk, and be true to yourself!
